THE EARLY SEX RESEARCHERS: THE KINSEY REPORTS - FEMALE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR

The data on female sexuality often parallel the data on males, although percentages and relationships to sociocultural factors differ in many instances. Around 70% of the female sample had masturbated, and around 50% had engaged in premarital intercourse. With respect to premarital intercourse the relationship to educational level was exactly opposite to the male data. Thus, females with more education were more likely to engage in premarital sex than were females who were less educated. Contrary to the beliefs of many people at that time, the majority of married females were orgasmic either through coitus or other sexual activities. Among the younger females (less than age 20) about 20% were not orgasmic, but by age 40 only about 5% reported being nonorgasmic. Kinsey noted that the factor which had the highest correlation with orgasm in marital coitus was premarital orgasmic experience. Very few women in Kinsey's sample (about 2%) reported being totally devoid of any sexual arousal, laying to rest the myth of widespread frigidity among the female population.
